Optical Isomerism in Complexes

Optical isomers are two non-superimposable, mirror images of each other.

Just as in organic chemistry, optical isomers are called enantiomers. They can be distinguished by their effect on plane-polarised light. Each isomer will rotate the light equally but in opposite directions.

Equal mixtures of enantiomers produce a racemic mixture, which has no effect on plane-polarised light.
