Acids and Bases - Acid and Base Strength (A-Level Chemistry)
Acid and Base Strength
Strength of Acids and Bases
Strong and Weak Acids
The strength of an acid depends on the concentration of hydrogen ions released.
Strong acids like hydrochloric, nitric and sulfuric acid fully dissociate releasing all their hydrogen ions.
Weak acids, like ethanoic acid, only partially dissociate, releasing some hydrogen ions.
An equilibrium is set up which lies far to the left.
Strong and Weak Bases
Strong bases, like strong acids, dissociate fully:
Weak bases, like weak acids, partially dissociate.
