States of Substances (GCSE Chemistry)
States of Substances
States of Matter
In this tutorial we will explore the different states of matter and how we can get from one state to another.
Substances can be one of three of the following states: solids, liquids or gases. Firstly we will discuss the arrangement and properties of each state before discussing changes in states.
Particle Theory
A scientific theory known as the particle theory is used to describe the arrangement and the movement of particles in all three states. The particle model can help us understand the properties of solids, liquids and gasses.
Limitations of the Particle Theory
Using the particle theory has many limitations such as it:
- Assumes all particles are spheres and are solids
- Does not show the forces between the particles holding them together
- Does not consider particles can be atoms, ions or molecules
- Does not illustrate particles can vary in size
