We’ve seen that respiration is the process by which all cells synthesise ATP in order to meet the energy requirements of various life processes.

Plants, animals and microorganisms need to respire so that they have energy to carry out these life processes.

Previously, we saw that energy is required for several processes in the body including:

Active transport
Exocytosis
Endocytosis
Anabolism
Cell division
Movement

The process of respiration also generates heat. This helps animals to maintain their core body temperature.
