Glycolysis

Introducing Glycolysis

Glycolysis in Respiration

In both aerobic and anaerobic respiration, the first step is glycolysis.

Glycolysis is the process by which glucose is broken down to produce ATP. Glucose (6C) is split into two molecules of pyruvate (3C). Oxygen is not required – glycolysis is anaerobic.

All steps of glycolysis take place within the cytoplasm.
