Absorption Spectrum
To reach different energy levels, different frequencies of electromagnetic radiation are needed. We can look at something called an absorption spectrum, to see the varying amounts of radiation which can be absorbed.
In the diagram below, the black lines mark the frequencies at which radiation is absorbed.
Radiation Spectrum
We can also use a spectrum to present the emission of radiation. This time the coloured lines mark the frequencies at which radiation is emitted.
The spectrum would be unique for every element, and each isotope of that element.
