Energy Resources: Trends in Usage
Trends in Usage
Non Renewable vs Renewable Energy Usage
The energy resources that tend to be used most often are the non-renewable resources. These are the most reliable resources, which include fossil fuels and nuclear fuel. They are more reliable than renewable energy resources, which depend heavily on the weather (which is out of our control).
However, these non renewable energy resources have some negative environmental impacts, including global warming. Therefore, we are trying to use more renewable energy sources.
Increased Energy Demand
- Increase in population. The global population is rapidly rising meaning more energy is needed to meet a higher demand.
- Increased use of technology. Less developed countries are beginning to use more technology, again increasing the demand for energy.
Changes in Energy Use
Changes from Non-Renewable to Renewable Energy
- Government pressure – the government has introduced targets to increase the country’s use of renewable energy sources. This is as a result of pressure from other countries.
- Financial grants – governments provide grants to companies to use renewable energy sources in their power plants.
- Vehicle manufacturers – hybrid cars are becoming more popular. These are a mix between electric and gas powered cars.
- Increased education and awareness – education through teaching and campaigning has to lead to more people wanting to increase their use of renewable energy.
