IVF: Development and Treatment Issues

Drawbacks of Fertility Treatment

Fertility treatment can be very useful and work well for some people, however there are some drawbacks. Here are some which you need to know:

  • Emotional and physical stress – Fertility treatment is often one of the final options for women struggling from fertility issues. Therefore, they often put all of their hopes into this treatment, which can lead to a lot of emotional strain for women who believe that this is the remedy for their struggles.
  • Low success rates and expensive – fertility treatments are not 100% successful and can be expensive. In fact, the success rate is actually quite low. This can add to the stress mentioned in the previous point.
  • Multiple births – fertility treatment can have negative consequences. It has been known to lead to multiple births, which can be very difficult for both the babies and the mother. This can manifest as twins, triplets and maybe even more. For those who have been put under financial burden to get this treatment, this can prove a very difficult scenario.
  • Ethical issues– Unused embryos are destroyed and as these had the potential for life, some think this is unethical. Also, if embryos are genetically tested before being chosen, some people think this is also unethical.
