Blood Vessels: Arteries
There are 3 main types of vessels: arteries, veins and capillaries.
Arteries
Arteries carry blood away from the heart to the rest of the body.
Structure
It is important to know a brief structure of arteries
- The arteries have the thickest walls – this is so they can withstand the high pressure of blood.
- Their walls are elastic – this is so that they can recoil to re-pump the blood along the way (like a spring), helping to maintain a high blood pressure.
- There is no need for valves– this is because blood is flowing so fast that there will not be any backflow.
