Rotation of Wires
- Placing coils of wire (also called solenoids) into a magnetic field causes them to rotate. This is because of the direction of the forces exerted on the coil.
- A common use of rotating coils is inside an electric motor. The coils also only rotate when a current passes through it so the motor can be switched on and off easily.
Forces Causing Rotation
- Conductors can experience forces. This is often when a current passes through a conductor as this generates a magnetic field. This magnetic field interacts with a second magnetic field causing a force to be exerted.
- The forces acting on a coil of wire in a magnetic field it will cause it to rotate. This rotation is used inside an electric motor.
