REPRESENTING IMAGES

Types of Image Files:

BMP (Bitmap): Bitmap images are composed of Picture Elements, commonly known as pixels. A pixel is the smallest definable area of an image, and its color can be altered by changing its value.

Image Resolution:

Resolution refers to the density of pixels within a specific area. This area is determined by the image’s dimensions, typically described in terms of width and height in pixels, such as 3264×2448.

dpi= dots per inch

resolution= width x length of the number of pixels in an image

Screen resolution is usually set at 72 dots per inch (dpi), while print-quality resolution is around 300 dpi.

Colour depth:

Color depth specifies the number of bits used to represent each colour in an image. As both the resolution and the colour depth increase, so do the file size and the overall quality of the image.

Image Processing: An image is essentially an array of pixels converted into binary format. This binary data is then processed by a computer to render the image.
