Haseeb
About Me
Dear prospective students/parents,
My name is Haseeb! I am a 4th year student and soon to be graduate of Durham University, obtaining a 1st class degree in a masters of mathematics. I arrived at Durham having achieved the best possible grades in mathematics possible: a 9 and A* in GCSE maths and further maths, and A*A* at A-Level maths and further maths. However, this didn’t come easy – as a student at my local comprehensive school the education I received was lacking, and it was only until after moving to the local grammar school did I realise what I missed out on. A high-quality education should have no barriers, though, and it is my experiences with this that have led me to become a longtime mentor and tutor, pushing forward other students to study mathematics at higher education regardless of their background.
In my spare time, I am a qualified powerlifting coach and find a lot of joy competing in the sport! I am an avid reader and traveller, often combining both hand-in-hand. I have experiencing working in the financial sector and I often program in Python in my free-time, working on all sorts of projects both work and non-work related. I am happy to talk about any of these and how they’ve all had a part to play in my mathematics education.
I hope to speak to you soon!
My teaching style
In my opinion, the biggest flaw in how mathematics is taught at secondary school is the lack of emphasis on understanding key concepts and the lack of contextual background. Have you ever wondered why we learn the quadratic formula? How complex numbers actually work? The uses of matrix operations?
The unwillingness to answer difficult questions such as these from teachers at school makes learning mathematics a chore for many students. This does not need to be the case.
As such, my lessons emphasise on making sure my students understand what they are learning, and why they are learning it. To do so, I adopt a university-like approach to lessons: I begin by introducing a concept, contextualising it and exploring its uses. Then, we go through worked examples together so you can see the concept in action. Finally, I let you put your knowledge to the test and have you answer questions on the material, encouraging you to vocalise your thought process whilst you do so and work with you to ensure you have a full understanding of the material.
My past experience
I have mentored students for the past three years in a non-profit I founded with my local school, targeting those in Year 12 going into Year 13 with applications on their minds and a set goal at hand. As such, I have a great experience with personal statements, university applications and tutoring students and I am looking to expand my network with more students.
My Proudest Achievements
My proudest achievements include not getting a grade lower than A across my GCSEs and A-Levels in any subject and achieving 100% in one paper at A-Level. Achievements outside of secondary school including a prize for my dissertation for best applied mathematics dissertation and my achievements as a competitive powerlifter.
