About Me

Hey! I’m Holly, nineteen years old and I use she/they pronouns. It’s always been my dream to attend the University of Oxford and to excel in my A-Levels, despite attending a school from an underrepresented and disadvantaged area. There should be no reason why anyone should miss out on the opportunity to reach their full potential, and I want to provide others with the resources they need to do this, if they can’t access them elsewhere.

More than just being a mentor, I would love to be a friend: someone who can support my mentees and reassure them that just because they’re struggling with a subject, absolutely doesn’t mean it’s out of reach. I want to reduce the awkwardness and anxiety that can come alongside talking to someone new, and allow them to trust me enough to ask questions and request help without embarrassment or fear of judgement. I’m flexible and will do my absolute best to accommodate any of my mentees’ needs, whether they’re to do with accessibility, wellbeing, content or anything else.

My teaching style

My usual method of teaching is having a discussion prior to the session, to highlight key topics or skills to focus on with the mentee, and preparing a powerpoint or similar resource beforehand. During the session, I will talk through the powerpoint, asking my mentee frequent questions to ensure they understand what I’m teaching. Towards the end of the session, I will provide them with exam questions to work through with me, so they can practice how to apply their new knowledge to an exam, and go through the mark scheme to see what is required and how to gain more marks.

For Oxbridge Applications, I can provide advice on various aspects of the admissions process, eg. choosing a college and the process by which decisions are made. When assisting with personal statements, I’ll help my mentee to explore their experience and interests relating to their subject, and help them to structure their writing in an efficient and effective way. During TSA tutoring, I’ll go through the different types of questions asked and provide a framework by which to approach each question, and use practice questions and essay prompts to develop my mentee’s speed and accuracy in completing papers. For interview preparation, I’ll structure sessions in a similar manner to the real interviews, but in a much more relaxed manner, having a chat about lots of different concepts and potential questions, while advising on how best to answer difficult questions or approach unknown stimuli.

However, I know these methods aren’t the most effective for everyone, and if a mentee finds that they could benefit more by learning a different way, I will do my best to alter the way I teach to accommodate this, whether this is with more visual or practical tasks, or something else entirely.

My past experience

I’ve mentored students through the application process to Oxbridge, including support with personal statements, admissions tests and interviews, for over a year, with a high proportion of these receiving interviews and offers.

I was a part of the Paired Reading programme at my Sixth Form for a year, where I worked with a younger student who had Special Educational Needs, encouraging him to read more slowly and fluently, and fully understand every word that he read. Over the year, it was clear to me and his subject teachers that the tutoring had dramatically improved his comprehension, and he was much more able to keep up with mainstream learning as a result of this.

Furthermore, I have been a mentor on the UK’s largest educational Discord server, Blair’s Brainiacs, since August 2021. As part of this role, I have lead revision sessions for GCSE and A-Level students in the run up to exams, answered questions and given advice to those studying my subjects.

My Proudest Achievements

Due to personal circumstances, I’ve had to go through the Oxford application process twice over – it was a huge challenge at the time, but I was successful in being given an interview and an offer both times, which I’m incredibly proud of myself for! Alongside the offers, I’m proud of myself for being resilient through what was a very difficult year, and thriving in spite of this.
