About Me

This doctoral research focused on developing novel antiviral nanomedicine strategies targeting influenza virus infections. The project centred on the conjugation of a potent antiviral peptide (FluPep) to gold and silver nanoparticles to enhance its therapeutic efficacy. Key objectives included optimising nanoparticle synthesis and functionalisation, characterising conjugates using advanced biochemical and spectroscopic techniques, and evaluating antiviral activity in vitro using MDCK cell cultures.

The study demonstrated that nanoparticle–peptide conjugates significantly improved antiviral potency compared to the free peptide, likely due to increased stability and multivalent interactions. Mechanistic insights were gained through viral replication assays, cytotoxicity testing, and reverse genetics approaches. The work contributed to a deeper understanding of peptide-based nanotherapies and their potential in combating influenza and other viral infections.

My teaching style

My teaching style is student-centred, structured, and flexible, tailored to suit each learner’s pace and ability. For GCSE and A-Level students, I simplify complex topics using clear explanations, diagrams, and real-life examples to aid understanding. I encourage active participation through questioning, problem-solving, and regular feedback. I also incorporate exam-focused strategies, such as past paper practice, mark scheme analysis, and time management techniques, to build confidence and improve performance. Above all, I create a supportive, engaging environment where students feel comfortable to ask questions, make mistakes, and grow academically.

My past experience

Yes, I have extensive experience in teaching and tutoring. Since 2015, I have worked as a science tutor with Tutorful, specialising in GCSE and A-Level Biology and Chemistry. I previously held lecturer roles in Iraq, teaching Clinical and Pharmaceutical Microbiology at university level between 2008 and 2013. Additionally, I served as a Laboratory Demonstrator at the University of Liverpool from 2015 to 2019, where I delivered hands-on practical sessions in microbiology, virology, and molecular biology to undergraduate students. Across all roles, I’ve supported learners with varying abilities, using clear explanations and tailored approaches to help them gain confidence and achieve academic success.

My Proudest Achievements

One of my proudest achievements was developing and validating a novel molecular method to detect foodborne viruses at the UKHSA, which improved diagnostic accuracy and led to new departmental capabilities. I’m also proud of my published PhD research on antiviral nanoparticle therapeutics, which contributed to the field of virology. Additionally, mentoring students and junior staff and seeing them succeed academically or professionally has been deeply rewarding.
