About Me

Hi! My name is Annoa Abekah-Mensah, I am 24 and I am a recent graduate from Wolfson College, Cambridge. My degree – Human, Social and Political Sciences – is a tripos which covers Politics and International Relations, Sociology and Social Anthropology and I absolutely loved it. I specialized in politics and anthropology with a particular interest in global justice, political communications and journalism. During my degree, I completed two internships at The Guardian News and Media in their podcasting and documentaries departments, and I will soon be starting my Master’s degree at UCL in Public Anthropology.

Before my time at Cambridge, I studied Politics, Philosophy and Economics at UCL. I have also previously worked in education and completed two internships at Barclays Investment Bank.

Outside of my academic work, I have co-produced an award-winning podcast, and coordinated a Saturday School for black children in Cambridge. I have also hosted conferences while at Cambridge, and was proud to be the BAME Representative for my college.

My hobbies include Formula 1; fashion, music and film – I think they are all beautiful forms of expression; fiction books – I love a good dystopian novel; and debating.

My teaching style

I believe teaching is all about understanding your student, building trust with them and helping them build confidence in themselves. I focus first on understanding where my student is at – particularly their confidence re the subject in question – before communicating with them my own personal experiences with their subject and how I overcame them, and understanding what their goals are. I believe that every student can achieve extremely highly and so I am glad to see students set high goals. For those that are more modest in their goal-setting, I focus on building their confidence through the teaching process to encourage them to shift their own goal post a little further. I believe in positive feedback and solo work, as well as collaborative work. In sessions, I will set tasks for them to do themselves and then work with them through their answers to understand their thought process and help them break down their own understanding to allow for self-corrections, as well as my corrections. I always end lessons on a positive note – making sure that students articulate everything they have achieved in the lesson so they are aware that they are constantly improving, especially through their mistakes. I will set homework tasks and my goal is for every student to meet, or ideally, outperform their goal.

My past experience

I was a piano teacher for 4 years – teaching students between the ages of 5 and 15. I also worked for Elevate Education for a year as a school presenter – visiting schools across England and teaching study and exam skills for students aged 11-18.

My Proudest Achievements

My proudest academic achievements would be my A* in A-Level Maths and getting into Cambridge and my two first class exam results in first and second year. My proudest extra-curricular achievements are definitely my podcast and the anti-racism workshops that I organized in my role as BAME Representative for Wolfson College.
