About Me

Hello, I’m Charles, a 20-year-old third-year Politics and International Relations student at the University of Exeter. I was born in Hong Kong and completed both the IGCSE and IB curricula, receiving offers from universities such as York, Loughborough, Leicester, and Exeter for Biological Sciences and Politics, which I have chosen to follow.

I’ve always enjoyed challenges, both academically and in sports. Growing up, I competed in a wide range of sports: from football and tennis to kung fu, which taught me discipline, resilience, and most importantly, patience. These qualities have shaped my approach to tutoring, helping me support students with understanding and encouragement as they work through their own challenges. I speak four languages: English, French, Spanish, and intermediate Chinese, and I enjoy bringing enthusiasm and a supportive attitude to every session.

Having experienced different education systems and cultures, I understand that every student learns in their own way. My multilingual skills and international background help me connect with students from diverse backgrounds and adapt my teaching style to suit their individual needs. This flexibility ensures lessons are relevant, engaging, and effective.

For me, tutoring is about more than just improving grades, it’s about building confidence and fostering a positive attitude toward learning. I aim to create a welcoming environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes. Seeing my students grow both academically and personally is what makes tutoring truly rewarding.

My teaching style

My approach is supportive, structured, and tailored to each student’s learning style—whether they’re visual, hands-on, or learn best through discussion. I focus on building both confidence and academic skills by encouraging curiosity, asking questions, and developing long-term study habits that help students become more independent learners.

I set a small amount of homework between sessions to review past material and introduce upcoming topics, helping students stay engaged and prepared. Lessons are interactive and enjoyable, using tools like flashcards, Quizlet, and Kahoot to make learning fun and memorable. I track progress, adapt sessions as needed, and always aim to create a calm, encouraging space where students feel supported and motivated.

My past experience

I’m an experienced and approachable tutor with a background in French, Maths, and English, having supported five students in achieving top grades and growing in confidence through tailored, one-on-one support.

In addition to tutoring, I’ve spent two years coaching surfing and coasteering for children aged 7+, and I currently work as a trampoline coach in Exeter. These roles have helped me develop a calm, motivating approach that encourages focus, builds resilience, and supports each child’s individual progress—both academically and personally.

My Proudest Achievements

I competed competitively in Hong Kong in several track events, and was part of the 4×100m relay team that won the silver medal. I also completed a 104 km ultramarathon in under 24 hours, a challenge that sharpened my resilience, discipline, and capacity for long-term focus.

On the professional side, I recently completed an internship at a cryptocurrency firm where I used Python to develop an anti‑money‑laundering (AML) detection tool that identifies suspicious transaction patterns for client review. This project allowed me to apply coding and analytical skills to a real‑world compliance problem and deliver a pragmatic solution.
