About Me

Hi there! My name is Josh, and I am currently in my third year of medical school at the University of Exeter. I have absolutely loved the course so far, and I believe that anybody who has the passion to pursue the challenging but extremely rewarding career of medicine should have the opportunity and tutoring to be able to do so!

A little bit about myself: I took a gap year after finishing college, which I spent mainly working in an A&E department as a healthcare assistant to gain some useful experience. I also took some time to travel through California, Nevada, Arizona and Utah during a road trip through the US which was incredible!

During my first two years at uni, I have tried to balance my time with a bit of surfing, swimming and bodyboarding here and there, as well as some (not always so frequent) gym sessions to get that exercise in.

I really enjoy the outdoors, and anything involving hiking, camping or travelling is right up my alley!

My teaching style

I think that a personalised, practice-focused approach is incredibly important for medical interview preparation. Whether you are beginning the interview preparation with absolutely no understanding of how the process works or simply trying to refine your communication skills, I will make sure to tailor the sessions to your individual needs and focus on what areas of your skillset need developing.

As somebody who did extensive preparation for all of my medical interviews, I have developed a strategy to refine the different elements that you are tested on and which incorporates the following:

1) Research into the universities you are applying to (What they look for, what questions have historically come up, what the format of their interview is, etc.).

2) Research into various different areas of medicine which you could be questioned on (Ethics, Structure of the NHS, Motivation, Empathy, Teamwork, etc…).

3) A focused look into certain commonly asked questions with tailored feedback on how you approached them (Why Medicine, Describe your work experience, Why is X important as a doctor, etc…).

4) General Mock questions and Mock interviews with personalised feedback.

5) University-specific Mock questions and Mock interviews with personalised feedback.

6) Answering any questions you may have and keeping track of your progress to identify any areas that need work.

Ultimately, knowing what questions will come up during your interview is impossible. However, through extensive practice and refinement of your communication skills, you will have the ability to tailor your knowledge and experience to whatever the universities throw at you!

You are all right at the beginning of your journey to becoming truly amazing doctors one day, and I hope to create an environment where you can make mistakes, learn from them and ask any questions you may have without feeling judged. 🙂

My Proudest Achievements

My proudest achievement has been receiving 4/4 offers from the medical schools to which I applied to. As you all know, the whole application process to medical school is extremely daunting and competitive, but having the opportunity to undertake such an incredible career makes it all worth it.

I’ve also been able to receive a Deans Commendation (top 10% of the year) for the last two years, and during my second year I received the prize for the Best Overall Applied Medical Knowledge Score in the year.

Because it is so competitive, it is really important that you get all the help you can so that you stand out from the rest on interview day!
