About Me
Hello, I am Jacob. I recently graduated from the University of Cambridge with a Masters degree in Natural Sciences. I specialise in biochemistry; having also studied cell biology, chemistry, and physics at the university level. Throughout my studies I have achieved research positions in many world-leading laboratories including the Gurdon Institute and Cancer Research UK Cambridge Institute. I currently work at CRUK as a research scientist, and will shortly begin a PhD investigating the molecular biology of resistance to radiation therapy in cancer. I have an extensive knowledge of biology and chemistry from my time learning directly from world leaders in these fields at Cambridge.
I have an interest and enthusiasm for science, particularly cell biology, which I hope to teach to others. I also aim to make Russell group universities and Oxbridge more accessible to bright students who have not recieved the right opportunities to excel.
My teaching style
For students applying to university or internship positions, I believe frequent interview practice is essential. A majority of interview committees search for individuals capable of understanding and adapting to topics they have not encountered before. For this reason I encourage my students to expand their knowledge by recommending scientific research papers and setting essays to farmiliarise students with the scientific writing style.
For students searching for success in exams I believe a trial-and-error approach is optimal. A-level and below exams are typically very rigid in their marking format. This enables a student to memorise areas where they missed out on marks and gain a knowledge of the marking scheme until these exams essentially become multiple choice. For university exams outside reading and practicing scientific writing technique is absolutely essential.
My past experience
I have experience supervising University of Cambridge students during my role at Cancer Research UK. I have experience tutoring a number students privately to help their applications to Oxbridge and improve their grades in the sciences.
