About Me

Hello I am Jaya, a 4th year medical student at the University of Edinburgh. I applied to Oxford, Edinburgh, St Andrews and Aberdeen medical schools, and received offers from the latter three. I understand that applying to medicine can be a stressful time and complicated to navigate. As your mentor, I will be there to support you throughout the process, and help you develop and showcase your skills most effectively.

I am a friendly and hard-working individual with great organisational and leadership skills. My teaching experiences include one-on-one mentoring and school-visits, where I have created teaching materials and taught on admissions tests, interviews, personal statements, strategic applying and university preparation. I have been helping medical school applicants for the last four years through which I have gained a good understanding of the expectations of medical school admissions and ways in which applicants can stand out from the crowd.

My passion for teaching is reflected in work I do at university. I am the Events Coordinator for Edinburgh University Society of Cardiothoracic Surgery, an Anatomy Tutorials Coordinator for Accessibility in Medicine, and I am on the committee for the British Association of Physicians of Indian Origin Young Doctors and Medical Students Forum. I am a student ambassador for SimPat and also pursuing an Undergraduate Certificate in Medical Education at the University of Edinburgh. I have organised and hosted career insight events, podcasts and conferences primarily with a focus on cardiology. I am involved in neuroscientific research and I am currently working towards publishing a paper on the development of an online living evidence summary tool to help the scientific community in carrying out systematic reviews of research.

I hope to work with you soon!

My teaching style

My mentoring is student-centered and focuses on needs and areas of improvement for the mentee. I am flexible with my style of input and can provide a facilitative teaching approach for those who are more independent learning, or a more guided traditional approach of teaching depending on the mentees preference. I have both created and compiled sets of resources that I have found useful over the years which I like to share with mentees. I am keen on creating a comfortable and supportive environment for mentees to ask questions, learn and develop their skills.

My past experience

My teaching experiences include one-on-one mentoring and school-visits, where I have created teaching materials and taught on admissions tests (UCAT/BMAT), interviews (MMI & group), personal statements, strategic applying and university preparation. I have written a blog post for Ace-the-UCAT on tips for sitting the UCAT.

At university, I am the Events Coordinator for Edinburgh University Society of Cardiothoracic Surgery, an Anatomy Tutorials Coordinator for Accessibility in Medicine, and I am on the committee for the British Association of Physicians of Indian Origin Young Doctors and Medical Students Forum. I am a student ambassador for SimPat and also pursuing an Undergraduate Certificate in Medical Education at the University of Edinburgh. I have organised and hosted career insight events, podcasts and conferences primarily with a focus on cardiology. I will also be presenting research I am involved in at the INSPIRE conference.

My Proudest Achievements

Last year I undertook a BMedSci in Surgical Science which I passed with 1st class. I enjoyed exploring my interest in surgery by shadowing and assisting a surgeon with an open umbilical hernia repair. I am involved in neuroscientific research and currently working towards publishing a paper on the development of an online tool generating systematic evidence summaries for research. I am undertaking an Undergraduate Certificate in Medical Education through which I am exploring my passion for medical education. I enjoy developing my leadership and teaching skills through my roles in medical education organisations and societies. I was the events coordinator for Edinburgh University Cardiovascular Society through which I organised and hosted career insight events, a podcast and a conference. I am the events coordinator for Edinburgh University Society of Cardiothoracic Surgery and the anatomy tutorials coordinator for Accessibility in Medicine for which I am planning similar events.
