Jishern
About Me
Hi! I am Jishern, a recent graduate from the University of Cambridge, where I studied Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology via Natural Sciences. I achieved 4A*s at A-Level (Maths, Further Maths, Chemistry, and Physics) and 9A*s and 2As at IGCSE, including being recognised as the Top Student in Malaysia for Additional Mathematics. I am passionate about helping students unlock their full potential, especially when applying to competitive universities.
At Cambridge, I ranked 3rd in my second year and was awarded the Churchill College Prize for the top Chemical Engineering student in college. I also received the prestigious Cambridge Trust Scholarship for all four years of my degree and won the Department’s Research Project Poster & Presentation Prize for my final-year research.
Over the past two years, I have helped students secure Oxbridge offers in Natural Sciences, Engineering, and Chemical Engineering, supporting them with ESAT preparation, interview skills, and personal statements. I look forward to helping many more reach their goals.
My teaching style
My teaching style is structured, goal-oriented, and highly personalised. I take time to understand each student’s strengths, challenges, and aspirations, and then tailor lessons to meet their specific needs. I focus on building a solid understanding of core concepts, while developing the critical thinking and problem-solving skills that top universities look for. I break complex topics into clear, manageable steps and use regular feedback to track progress and boost confidence. For Oxbridge applicants, I place strong emphasis on interview preparation, encouraging students to articulate their thought process and tackle unfamiliar problems with calm, logical reasoning. My aim is not just to improve academic performance, but to empower students to take ownership of their learning and succeed beyond the classroom.
My past experience
Yes, I have over two years of experience tutoring students in Maths, Science, and Oxbridge applications. I’ve supported students with ESAT preparation, personal statements, and mock interviews for Natural Sciences, Engineering, and Chemical Engineering. I have also given talks and Q&A sessions at Garden International School to help students navigate the Oxbridge admissions process. In addition, I worked as a Year 9 Maths teaching assistant at St Paul’s School, where I led lessons and provided one-to-one support to help students grasp challenging topics and build confidence.
My Proudest Achievements
Being awarded the Churchill College Prize for top Chemical Engineering student and ranking 3rd in my Cambridge cohort are achievements I am very proud of, as well as receiving the Cambridge Trust Scholarship across all four years. I’m also proud of helping students achieve their goals and helping them secure Oxbridge offers through mentoring. Equally meaningful to me are my volunteering experiences—leading a team to implement a water filtration system for an indigenous community in Malaysia, refurbishing a nursery in Thailand, and teaching refugee children essential academic and life skills. These experiences shaped my character and deepened my commitment to education and impact.
