About Me

Hi, my name is Ben Spink and I recently graduated from Durham University with a 2:1 in Music and Philosophy. I have a huge passion for music – in performance I play the trumpet to grade 8 standard, drums and tuned percussion and sing. I have a vast knowledge of the history of music through GCSE (A*), A level (A) and historical modules at university, and I researched in depth the role of the trumpet in British music, 1945-90 for my university dissertation in which I achieved a 2:1. I also have an interest in the psychological impact of music which was a key aspect to my EPQ at Marlborough College titled: ‘Can Music Enhance Sporting Performance’ (A). In Philosopy I achieved A* at GCSE, A at A-Level and excelled in Philosophy at University, particularly with modules surrounding ethics in business, the environment and with animals.

My teaching style

I am friendly, have a bubbly personality and highly communicative with the way I teach by giving constant advice and effective solutions for improving and developing. I am willing to be flexible in order to fit the needs and requests of students. Lessons are always engaging with quizes and fun games which are structured to the learning goal of the lesson.

My past experience

I am a level 2 LTA qualified tennis coach working with various schools such as Sherborne Girls, Lewiston and the Gryphon school and most recently as a sports/tennis coach in Christchurch, New Zealand. I enjoy working with children and seeing them develop.

My Proudest Achievements

At Hazlegrove Prepatory School I was head boy and captained cricket, hockey and tennis 1st Teams. I was a national finalist in British Schools Modern Biathlon Championship. At Marlborough College I was a school prefect, sports and music scholar, captain of 1st XI hockey and cricket, achieved AAB in A Levels and achieved an A in my EPQ titled: ‘Can Music Enhance Sporting Performance?’.
I graduated Durham with a 2:1 in Music and Philosophy with a 2:1 in my dissertation titled: ‘The Role of the Trumpet in British Music 1945-90’. I represented Durham Hockey’s 1st XI winning the BUCS Premier League in my final year.
