About Me
I hold a 1st class degree in History from UCL and an MA with Distinction awarded jointly by the Humboldt University and Free University Berlin. I am currently studying for a PhD in History at Cambridge.
I have won several academic awards at undergraduate and postgraduate level including: the DAAD Scholarship, the World History Association Graduate Essay Award, the Hamilton Writing Award and the Michael Sprinker Memorial Writing Prize. I have also won awards for popular/non-academic writing including the Webb Memorial Trust and New Statesman Writing Prize and the Hubert Butler Essay Prize.
I have taught English and History for several years both within secondary schools and as a private tutor. I have been particularly successful, as a private tutor, in preparing students for university admission. Students I have worked with have received offers from Oxford, Cambridge, Heidelberg, Gottingen, Manchester, UCL and other universities
My teaching style
My approach is student-centered and I tailor lessons to individual needs, encouraging discussion and independent analysis. Depending on the needs of the student, I am happy to follow a structured teaching course, or a more flexible approach. The most effective teaching comes when the student develops an interest and genuine engagement with the material so I always try to communicate an enthusiasm for the subject, to relate it to the particular interests of each student and to spark their interest in independent study.
My past experience
I have several years experience with teaching and tutoring. In secondary schools I have taught English Literature and History. As a private tutor I have taught several subjects and have, in particular, specialised in helping students prepare for university admission. I have also taught English as a Second Language to a variety of learners at all levels.
My Proudest Achievements
In my final year of undergraduate study, I earned the highest grades in my department and was awarded the highly competitive DAAD scholarship to study in Germany. As continuing my studies in Germany was my greatest ambition at the time, this achievement was especially meaningful to me.
