About Me
Hello!
My name is Lian and I am a UCL and Cambridge University graduate. I did History and Philosophy for my undergrad degree/Master’s, and now I am doing studying Medicine at Warwick University with the end goal of being a doctor.
Teaching and helping people has always been something very important to me, and helping others find that moment where learning comes together and “clicks” is something I enjoy helping students do. I combine a variety of techniques and learning-styles to keep students engaged and actively learning. I do like to change the approach to teaching dependent on the student and what I feel works best for them, as people learn differently.
With regards to my previous experience, I have been tutoring online and in students’ homes for around seven years, and I worked in a secondary school as a teaching assistant previously in 2021-2022, as well.
My teaching style
A variety of techniques, mainly didactic teaching. I like to lead through questions instead of giving students the answers immediately. I think quizzes, active memory recall and making summary mind-maps and timelines work really well (from experience). Occasionally, I might do some lecturing-style or classroom-style teaching if the workload content is heavy and we need to get through it, but I always try to incorporate some interactive techniques to keep students engaged and actively learning.
My past experience
Yes – I have been tutoring for 6-7 years now, since my undergraduate degree. I also volunteered and tutored prospective UCL applicants at university, and worked in a secondary school for 5-6 months in 2021 after I graduated.
My Proudest Achievements
With regards to tutoring, some of my proudest moments include supporting some A-levels students pass their UCAT with a high enough score to apply to their first choice universities. I remember being in the position where I wanted to do well and get into my dream university, and making that happen was so special. It meant a lot to be able to support others to do the same.
In my personal life, getting into medical school has been an especially proud moment, of late.
