About Me
Hi, I’m Louis, a 2nd year PPEist at Magdalen College, Oxford. I tend to prefer political philsophy, ethics, and the history of thought, however these are not exclusive, and I have studied broadly around philosophy, politics, and economics thus far at university, as well as wider interest before.
I also row in the college’s first boat, training 6-7 times per week, hold a position on the college’s JCR (like a student council?), am a member of various academic societies (Philosophy soc, politics soc, society of Bibliophiles, and so on.), and am Vice-President of the college Wine Society, which seeks to make more accessible this otherwise somewhat exclusive hobby.
Outside of Oxford, I live in the Peak District, where I enjoy hiking, playing the piano, clarinet, and saxophone, and reading. I also gain much from charity work, having spent the summer volunteering with refugees as they arrive into the EU. This, alongside my enjoyment of travel, has opened my eyes to the need of different types of, and a need for, clarity of communication, a consideration of different styles of understanding, as well as the political issues more directly related to my study.
My teaching style
As mentioned, I prefer one-to-one tutoring that is a conversation, almost in the style of a mini-Oxford tutorial. I first perform some diagnostics to identify strengths and weaknesses, and then seek to draw those out through conversation. In this way I seek to promote clear and critical thought. I will then set or suggest some tasks to be completed in order to sharpen any weaknesses, until we meet again and can discuss.
My past experience
I have tutored for Zero Gravity (a charity offering tutoring for students of disadvantaged backgrounds), for Magdalen College Outreach, as part of my old school’s Oxbridge support programme, as well as for individuals who have approached me outside of this.
My Proudest Achievements
Those that have taken me outside of my comfort zone, for example nerves relating to music diploma exams, rowing competitions, or even something silly like learning to dance for Calsoc (despite my lack of ability).
