Thomas
About Me
Hi there!! I’m Thomas, currently reading English Language and Literature at the University of Oxford. I have just recently passed through the stress of A levels and uni admissions, having spent my last five years at St Paul’s School in London.
At school, I was awarded a John Colet Scholarship (awarded to the top 14 pupils at 13+ entry), a Senior Academic Scholarship, as well as the Milton prize for English, and the Blair prize for ‘thinking creatively and laterally across disciplines’ (very vague, I know). For my A levels, I achieved 4 A* and an A in English Literature, History, Latin, an EPQ (where I managed to gain full marks), and Maths respectively, as well as 11 9s at GCSE level.
Aside from numbers and grades, I play the cello and piano. I am a cricket and rugby fanatic, but love both playing and watching as many sports as possible. Currently, I’m trying to improve some highly questionable tennis abilities…
I would consider myself to be relaxed and friendly, but most importantly I aim to be as diligent as possible in everything that I do. I great take pride in holding myself to the highest possible standards, and tutoring is no exception.
My teaching style
My teaching style revolves around engaging my students as much as possible. My favourite teachers have always been the ones who don’t just lecture but engage in active discussion with their students, a philosophy I have tried to adapt. I push my students out of their intellectual comfort zone, asking them lots of questions and encouraging them to think for themselves. I pay especially close attention to written work, offering detailed analysis. After all, English is a subject heavily based around the ability to not only write, but to write well.
My past experience
For the last couple months, I have been working as a private tutor for English Language and Literature. Two years ago, I also mentored students practicing for their GCSE French Speaking examinations.
My Proudest Achievements
Getting accepted into Oxford. I was also especially proud of gaining a scholarship to St Paul’s in a time where there was a lot of change and disruption within my life
