About Me
Hello and nice to meet you! I’m Jasmine and I’m currently a first year medical student at the University of St. Andrews. In sixth form, I studied A-Level AQA Biology, Edexcel Chemistry and OCR English Literature and did an Extra Project Qualification in leukaemia treatments. I think this variety of subjects has really helped me to become more well-rounded and has honed critical skills that will aid my learning. I’m from Hong Kong but I’ve studied abroad in the UK since I was 13 so I’m well-aware of the education system from pre-GCSEs onwards. In my free time, I love to bake yummy treats for my friends and family, as well as curl up on my bed with a cup of tea and watch tv shows until my heart’s content! If my friends were to describe me in one word, the word would be “attentive”, and I think that’s a really important quality in making sure that I can provide high-quality teaching and be understanding of how strenuous medical school applications are. Having gone through the medical school application not long ago, I understand how anxious you must be and I’m here to make the application process easier for you!
My teaching style
I’d say that my priority is to make our tutoring sessions educational but equally, engaging at the same time. I’m personally quite a visual learner so I like making use of brainstorms to discuss our ideas. I will be utilising active recall to make sure that the students are consolidating the knowledge from previous sessions and I think this is a great way to identify gaps in their knowledge so that we can work on them.
My past experience
During sixth form, I helped tutor GCSE English Literature in a refugee mentoring scheme at school and it was a unique experience. Because the tutee wasn’t fluent in English, I utilised pictures, diagrams and short, condensed videos to solidify their understanding and to check in on their understanding periodically, making sure that I was going at the right pace.
My Proudest Achievements
My proudest achievement would be stepping out of my comfort zone and going to boarding school at a young age. I think that I’ve learnt to be much more independent and been able to make lots of friends!
