About Me

Hi! My name is Emily, and I’m a 20 year old from Frankfurt, Germany. I graduated from Jesus College, Oxford this year and am currently pursuing a masters degree in economics at UCL; following that I want to work at the Bank of England or the ECB. I’m passionate about making the Oxbridge application process more accessible, and have been involved in open days and multiple outreach events at Jesus College.

Academically, I’m a true all-rounder; my interdisciplinary degree equipped me with excellent writing, reasoning and maths skills. There are multiple subjects I have excelled in and have a passion for that I’m certain will rub off on my students: economics, philosophy, maths, English literature and my native German.
I also want to help Oxford hopefuls create the strongest application they can, starting with the personal statement. I would help my student identify, read up on and talk about specific areas of interest within their subject with passion and eloquence. Having achieved top 10th percentile results in the maths and verbal reasoning sections in both the Oxford TSA and the graduate GRE, I am well-versed in test taking strategies. I was also a nationally ranked competitive debater; as such I believe my public speaking training will help me instil confidence in applicants that find the interview process daunting.

In short- any potential students would be in great hands!

My teaching style

I believe in two central tenets for a good teaching strategy:
1. active, not passive learning, and
2. practice makes perfect
Although I am good at explaining difficult topics by breaking them down into simpler components, I believe a good explanation is only half the battle. To consolidate my students’ understanding, I engage them in a variety of tasks such as practice problems and mock interviews. This also helps identify mistakes and particular areas of weakness, which can then be practiced until the errors are rooted out. This technique is particularly effective for exams.

My past experience

I taught part-time at the International School Frankfurt summer school programme, where I taught economics and history to struggling students in danger of repeating the year. I am proud to say that all of my students passed!

My Proudest Achievements

Getting into Oxford! As an overseas applicant, my school had little knowledge about the application process and couldn’t offer me much assistance- in fact, I was advised against applying! Competing against private school applicants who had as many as ten mock interviews, I truly felt I beat all the odds by getting in.
