About Me
Hi, I’m Eileen! I’m a second-year Medical Student at the University of Oxford and an experienced GCSE and A-level tutor.
I achieved 12 grade 9s at GCSE and 3 A*s at A-level, and have since ranked within the top decile of my year at Oxford. However, one of the most important things I have learnt throughout my education is that academic success is not simply about being “naturally clever”.
My own results have come from persistence, curiosity, developing effective study techniques and learning how to translate understanding into marks in an exam.
This is a large part of why I enjoy tutoring.
I know how much difference the right explanation, study strategy or piece of feedback can make when a student is struggling with a topic.
I want to help students understand why something works rather than feeling that they have to memorise endless facts.
Having recently been through GCSEs and A-levels myself, I also understand the pressure students can feel around exams. I aim to create a friendly and encouraging environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, getting things wrong and working through difficult concepts without judgement.
Ultimately, I want my students to leave lessons not only better prepared for their exams, but more confident in their own ability to learn and tackle unfamiliar problems independently.
My teaching style
I take a personalised, supportive and exam-focused approach to teaching. I start by identifying a student’s strengths, areas for improvement and preferred learning style, then adapt lessons accordingly. I focus on helping students genuinely understand concepts rather than simply memorising information, using clear explanations, questions and worked examples to build understanding.
Once the foundations are secure, I place a strong emphasis on applying knowledge to exam questions. I help students break down unfamiliar questions, recognise what examiners are looking for and develop effective exam technique. I also encourage students to explain their reasoning to me, as this helps identify misconceptions and builds confidence.
Most importantly, I aim to create a friendly environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes. My goal is for students to become increasingly confident and independent, so that the strategies we develop together continue to help them outside our lessons.
My past experience
I have several years of private tutoring and mentoring experience, teaching GCSE Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Maths, as well as A-level Biology. I have worked with students across a wide range of abilities, adapting my teaching to their individual goals and learning styles.
I also support aspiring medical students with university admissions and interview preparation. One student I supported achieved an A* in A-level Biology and secured four out of four Medicine offers. Alongside private tutoring, I have mentored prospective Oxford applicants through Target Oxbridge and supported prospective students with interview preparation through Oxford ACS.
I also regularly communicate with parents about their child’s progress, areas for improvement and how they can support their learning between lessons.
My Proudest Achievements
One of my proudest achievements as a tutor has been supporting a student who went on to achieve an A* in A-level Biology and secure four out of four offers to study Medicine. Seeing their confidence and ability develop throughout the process was particularly rewarding.
Academically, I am also proud to have achieved 12 Grade 9s at GCSE, 3 A*s at A-level and subsequently ranked within the top decile of my Oxford Medicine cohort. I was awarded the Biochemistry and Medical Genetics Prize after achieving 95.5%, the highest score in my cohort.
