Hello! My name is Iris, a certified Chinese teacher with nearly eight years of experience teaching Mandarin and Cantonese to students around the world. I specialize in creating engaging, culturally rich lessons that blend language learning with storytelling, music, and real-life context. Fluent in English, Mandarin, Cantonese, and Japanese, I tailor my teaching to each student’s background and goals—whether you’re preparing for exams, traveling abroad, or deepening your cultural understanding. My lessons are interactive, poetic, and practical, often incorporating visual aids, role-play, and bilingual materials. I believe language is a bridge to connection, and I’m passionate about helping learners discover the beauty of Chinese through curiosity, creativity, and care. Let’s embark on this journey together!
My teaching style
My teaching style is immersive, poetic, and student-centered. I blend storytelling, music, and cultural context to make Mandarin and Cantonese come alive. Lessons are tailored to each learner’s goals, whether conversational fluency, exam prep, or cultural exploration. I use bilingual materials, role-play, and visual aids to build confidence and curiosity. With empathy and creativity, I guide students to discover the rhythm and beauty of Chinese language through meaningful, real-world connections.
My past experience
Since 2017, I have been dedicated to teaching Chinese in Hong Kong. After graduating from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, I began volunteering at The Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui Lady MacLehose Centre, where I taught Cantonese to children and parents from ethnic minority communities. This meaningful work helped families better integrate into Hong Kong society and deepened my commitment to inclusive education. In 2022, I earned my TCSOL (Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages) qualification, which empowered me to expand my reach globally. Since then, I’ve taught both Mandarin and Cantonese to students from diverse cultural backgrounds, including high-profile clients. My approach is empathetic, culturally sensitive, and tailored to each learner’s goals—whether conversational fluency, exam preparation, or cultural immersion.
My Proudest Achievements
One of my proudest milestones was winning the championship in Hong Kong’s Chinese Story Writing for Students with my livelihood fairytale Imagined Electric Street. This story, rich in imagination and social reflection, was later translated into English and Japanese, and published in a short story collection by The Hong Kong Public Libraries. I was also honored with the Gold Award from the Young Friends of the Hong Kong Arts Festival and recognized as one of the Outstanding Arts Critics in Hong Kong. In recognition of my creative and academic potential, I received the Talent Development Scholarship, awarded by the Education Bureau of the HKSAR.
