8About Me
Hiya! I’m James, a second year MSci Theoretical Physics student at the University of Nottingham. I achieved A*AAAA in Maths, Further Maths, Physics, Chemistry and EPQ respectively at A-Level and 10 9s at GCSE, leading to an award for the highest GCSE grades across my academy trust of ~50 schools, in 2021.
I have extensive knowledge of the Edexcel A-Level Maths and Further Maths (Core Pure 1&2, Further Pure 1 and Decision 1 modules) courses, as well as OCR A Physics and Chemistry courses. I am proficient in Python, and frequently use this throughout my degree in labs, coursework, and exams, achieving 100% in my computer science module last year. Overall, I received a First Class for my first year, with an average of 84%, including a 90% in the maths module.
I had two interviews and received an offer from the University of Cambridge (Jesus College), as well as offers from UCL, and the Universities of Manchester, Nottingham and York.

My teaching style
I find a ‘Chalk-and-Talk’ approach works best, involving working through an example problem or problem set first, explaining thoroughly each step, allowing the student to build a clear structure in their mind about how to approach each style of question.
If the session is interview prep-related, rather than content-based, I will take the role of the interviewer and present a number of real interview questions posed in the past. A portion of these they will be walked through, and others they will be tackling on their own (as in the real interview style). These sessions may also be used for personal statement help, or other admissions-related affairs.
My past experience
Whilst this is my first professional tutoring arrangement, I have informally tutored for many years whilst I was in Sixth Form, and the upper years of secondary school. These were weekly sessions with a small group of Year 9 & 10 students, working on GCSE Maths. One of my tutees in particular raised his grade from a 4 to an 8 in a space of mere weeks.
