Lola
About Me
My name is Lola, I am a third year student of Italian and Spanish at the University of Oxford.
I live in London where I completed the IB Diploma Programme. I took Higher Level English Literature, Spanish B and History, alongside Standard Level Mathematics, Biology and Film. I scored 45/45 IB points.
I am currently on my Year Abroad. I studied for a semester at the Università di Bologna in Italy, and then held an internship in Madrid, Spain. I am now preparing for my final year which begins in October.
I attend St Catherine’s College where I like to play pool and work as a Student Ambassador. I was also Senior Editor of Global Affairs for The Oxford Blue and enjoy learning about Latin American politics. My main passions, however, are Italian and Spanish language and literature.
I am multilingual, having grown up speaking English and Serbian. I have been learning Spanish for over 10 years, whereas I started learning Italian at university. So, in short, I know the struggles of learning languages and can find the right balance between theory and practice.
My teaching style
I like to get to know the student, figure out their learning style and formulate my teaching around that. I strongly believe that nobody is incapable of learning something, it is just about finding the right learning style and teacher, and approaching the task with the right mindset. So if anything, my teaching style is one where I show students that they are capable of learning whatever they set their mind to. Within languages in particular, the best way to learn is just lots of practice designed around the student’s interests. It involves a mixture of listening, speaking, writing and reading. Above all, the most important thing is making mistakes and growing in confidence. Nobody can truly master a language and as such the best way to improve is to remove that barrier of fear. As soon as perfection is not sought for, the brain finds alternative ways to express itself using what it knows, and that’s where mastery of a language comes in.
