Owen
About Me
Hi! I’m Owen and I’m a graduate of Girton College at the University of Cambridge, where I read MA Modern and Medieval Languages and MPhil Anglo-Saxon, Norse and Celtic from 2018 to 2023. During my undergraduate I studied French and German, with a focus on historical and comparative linguistics and spent a year abroad at the University of Strasbourg, studying Russian, Dutch, and Swedish, alongside comparative linguistic research. Following my interests in Germanic philology, I stayed at Cambridge for my MPhil in Anglo-Saxon, Norse and Celtic, continuing further study of Old Norse and Old English alongside a dissertation on Reflexives and Self in Old English, Old High German, and Old Saxon.
Following graduation, I took up various professional, full-time roles in education consultancy, leading in-house support for personal statements, admissions tests, and interviews at hundreds of schools across the UK and around the world. I’ve delivered presentations on Oxbridge applications, preparation, and strategy to thousands of students and have designed and delivered training to help teachers at some of the UK’s top independent schools better support their own students with university applications. I’ve personally consulted with hundreds of students for (almost!) every subject at Oxbridge and have supported applicants across languages, linguistics, literature, ASNC, and history through the entire application process, from course, university, and college selection, to supercurricular engagement, admissions tests, personal statements, written work, and mock interviews.
I enjoy teaching A-level French, German, and English Literature too, and have supported dozens of A*A*A* students across all major exam boards. I’m also a British Council certified counsellor and have completed Russell Group certified training on supporting students to progress to competitive universities.
I particularly welcome interest from MML, Modern Languages, Linguistics, ASNC, and English Literature applicants, although I tutor across the humanities. Outside of undergraduate preparation, I also work with postgraduate applicants to Russell Group universities, provide proofreading and editing for PhD theses and articles, and teach Old English and Old Norse to interested students.
My teaching style
I take a data-driven approach to university applications, combining my own experience from talking to thousands of applicants with analysis of admissions data to provide evidence-based guidance and support for students targeting Oxford, Cambridge, and other top universities. For A-level and GCSE tuition, I aim to give students a similar experience to a Cambridge supervision, inviting students to tackle complex topics and engage with ideas above and beyond what they’ve studied at school to both help them achieve top results in their exams as well as building more general academic interest and engagement.
My past experience
After graduating, I took up the role of Head of Schools at a top education consultancy, leading the design, promotion, and delivery of in-school university application and supercurricular support for Oxbridge applicants at top schools across the UK and around the world, later continuing on to Head of Schools at another firm. In these roles I’ve been fortunate to have the opportunity to work with students, parents, and teachers directly, leading 1-on-1 consultations on application strategy and preparation, as well as personally designing and delivering in-person and online presentations on university applications at hundreds of schools around the UK and internationally such as UCS, Benenden, EJM, Putney High, and Wellington Tianjin, Hangzhou, and Shanghai.
I am particularly proud of my work personally designing and delivering teacher training programmes for multiple top schools such as Rugby, Wellington, and CSFC, supporting their teachers and counselling teams with resources and advice to help them better understand the application process and prepare their students for university. I have also worked to promote and deliver in-school support for strategic consultations, supercurricular engagement, personal statements, admissions tests, and interviews, organising and supporting delivery of group and 1-on-1 support at independent schools such as Tonbridge, KEHS, and JAGS, as well as states and MATs such as OAT, Mulberry Schools Trust, JFS, JCoSS, Harris Federation, and more.
Since 2023 I have worked with hundreds of UK and international students, both within professional roles, through agencies, and independently, supporting with undergraduate applications to Oxbridge, G5, and other top UK universities, from initial strategic guidance for pre-16s through to A-level tuition, course and university choice, supercurricular engagement, personal statement support, written work support, admissions test preparation, and mock interviewing. I have also supported students with postgraduate applications and research proposals for Russell Group universities, as well as providing proofreading and editing for PhD theses and other academic writing.
My Proudest Achievements
I’m most proud of the work I have done working in-house with leading schools around the country designing and delivering preparation courses for Oxbridge applications as well as personally delivering presentations and teacher training on Oxbridge admissions, through which I’ve been able to directly support hundreds, and indirectly thousands, of students to take up their dream places at top universities.
