About Me

I’m Javi. I’ve been a languages teacher for about three years. One in the UK and two abroad. I’ve specialisied in teaching English in non-English speaking countries and Spanish in the U.K.

I was born in Guatemala and studied English at school in there. Thanks to that, after getting a journalism degree from Universidad del Istmo, I started teaching English and Italian at Academia Europea, in which I learned the IALS (Interactive Language System). There I learned to teach using 100% target language from day 1 even with the less advanced of groups. This would make them speak their target language to a basic level in around four months. I did the same thing in Italian in the same institution. I got private lessons, in which I taught one stuedent at a time only, then semi-private in which I taught groups from 2-4 and group classes in which I simultaneously taught groups of up to 15 students of all ages at one time.

I left that job because I migrated to Spain to study a master’s in HR. After that, I used my languages to be cabin crew for Ryanair, and after having become a purser, I decided to come back to education. That is when I started studying my PGCE with St. Mary’s University and got involved with the U.K.’s education system. There I understood other methods of teaching languages and taught Spanish in KS3 and KS4.

My best quality is adaptability, as I believe I can teach any person who is willing to learn, regardless of how difficult they might find the subject.

My teaching style

I am adaptable and patient as well. I like to understand my students and their preferred method of learning, and go on from there. I do not mind repeating the same thing over and over again if it needs re-explaining. Equally, I do not mind going at a brisk pace for the tutees that would need this.

My past experience

When I taught English to a Spanish-speaking tutee who was looking to go to Canada for a year on an exchange, I adapted to her needs. My tutee would ask me to read “Memoirs of a Geisha” for her English class in English, and we would do that in class, and when she needed help and an explanation, we would stop, try to keep our target language (English in that case) and if it was not possible, we would switch to Spanish in which I could explain things to her better.

My Proudest Achievements

When my tutee managed to go to Canada and she managed to speak to the locals by herself.

I teach
