The Biology Summer School Programme Overview
Study Mind’s Biology Summer School provides students with advanced knowledge of biology. Through higher-level classes, hands-on experiments and experience of biological fieldwork, our summer school is specifically designed to provide an in-depth understanding of biology and it’s practical application in the real world.
Tailored for ages 15-18, students will gain hands-on experiences such as conducting laboratory experiments and participating in field trips to Kew Gardens, rivers and local ecosystems to study biodiversity and conservation. Students will also gain expert support writing personal statements, preparing for university and an in-depth explanation of what career pathways are available in a biological sphere.

The camp offers both residential and non-residential options. Residential students stay in safe, supervised accommodation in University College London’s (UCL) central halls, Ramsay Hall. This accommodation, linked to one of the world’s top universities, is ideally located near Oxford Street and is the heart of London suitable for ages 15–18. We offer:

What biology related skills will I learn during the programme?
You’ll investigate diverse biological fields, including ecosystems, genetics, and essential laboratory practices. The programme will also instruct you in experimental design and environmental sampling, all crucial for aspiring biologists. These skills will greatly enrich your biology work experience and establish a robust groundwork for future biological studies.
Who can attend the Biology Summer School?
The Biology Summer School is open to students aged 15–18 from all academic backgrounds. Whether you are a complete beginner or already studying biology at an advanced level, the programme is designed to support and challenge you at the right pace.
Do I need prior biology knowledge?
No prior biology experience is required. The course begins with essential foundational concepts and gradually progresses to advanced topics, including laboratory experiments and guided fieldwork, so all students can learn confidently.
How is the content delivered, and will I receive any formal certification?
The programme integrates interactive sessions, hands-on lab work, ecological studies at Kew Gardens, and expert talks on diverse biology topics like DNA and ecosystems. Upon completion, you’ll receive a certificate suitable for your CV and UCAS application, effectively highlighting your biology work experience and commitment to the subject.
What kind of certificate will I receive?
Students receive a recognised certificate that outlines their laboratory skills, fieldwork experience, and completed projects. This certificate can significantly strengthen university and college applications.
How many students are in a group?
There will be no more than 12 students in every programme group. This allows for small group teaching and workshops to ensure that you get the best out of your experience.
Does Study Mind have a bursary scheme?
As part of our widening participation scheme, Study Mind runs a bursary scheme for students from disadvantaged backgrounds. These include full bursaries, as well as 75% and 50% bursaries. Applications are now being accepted and students will be informed from the 16th June if they have been accepted into a programme. This scheme is on a first come, first served basis. Students wishing to apply for the scheme will need to:
- provide proof of receipt of Universal Credit, Free School Meals and Pupil Premium.
- Fill in the Bursary Application Form
- complete an essay task.
- provide a reference from a teacher (either head of sixth form or relevant subject teacher). This can be a character reference and include information on general work ethic and grades if applicable.
Students who partially meet this criteria are welcome to apply, and may be offered discounted places where free places are already assigned.

How can I customise my biology work experience?
You can customise your work experience in several ways with two or three week options available:
Career & Life Skills: You can choose to add a second week with our Career & Life Skills week. In this experience you will learn all about digital literacy and creating your personal brand to market yourself to future employers with LinkedIn profiles and standout CVs. You will also learn about Financial Literacy, including loans, mortgages and taxes. You will navigate the world of AI and find out how to optimise it when using it to assist you with documents like your personal statement.
A Related Work Experience Week: You can also choose to extend your work experience by choosing one of our related programmes including Medicine or Chemistry. Or if you're thinking about a different career as well, you can choose something completely different!
How does the summer school support university applications and careers?

What should I bring to the work experience week?
We recommend that students bring a notepad and pen to take notes (or a device to write on). In addition, students should bring a water bottle for the day. Students do not need to bring lunch as this will be provided but they might want to bring a couple of snacks to eat throughout the day. Please make sure these snacks are NUT FREE to take into account any students that may have nut allergies. Students on certain programmes such as Computer Science, will need to bring their own device. If you have not got a laptop, one will be provided. A specialised list will be communicated nearer to the time.
Where is the work experience located?
The summer school takes place in Cambridge, offering a blend of university-style laboratory sessions and outdoor field trips to nearby ecosystems and biodiversity research sites.
Where is the accommodation?
Students opting for the residential programme will stay in Ramsay Hall, part of the University College London (UCL) campus. Students will stay in single occupancy rooms with shared bathroom facilities. Male and female students will be placed in separate floors.
When do I check in and check out of the accommodation?
Students will be able to arrive on the Sunday before the start of the programme. There will be a member of the Study Mind team to greet you. Students will check out on the Friday after the programme has ended. If you would like to book an extra night accommodation (e.g. Friday night), please contact us and we can arrange this for you (dependant on availability).
What programme durations are available?
Students can choose from 1-week, 2-week, or 3-week programmes. Optional add-on weeks are also available for those who wish to develop extra skills such as data analysis, research techniques, and scientific reporting.
When will I receive a schedule of activities?
Students can expect to receive a finalised timetable of their work experience week by the end of May. Students will also receive further information on what to pack/bring and pre-preparation materials by mid June so that they can prepare themselves for the programme and get the most out of their experience.
Can I attend two different weeks that aren’t together?
Yes, students can book weeks that are not consecutive. You can pick the weeks that are best for you. If you would like more support in booking weeks, please contact us.
If I book more than one week, what happens at the weekend?
If you are a student who has booked a residential stay for two or three weeks, activities will be arranged for the weekend. Previous excursions have included a day trip to Cambridge, shopping in London and London sightseeing. Details of the exact programme will be sent by the end of May.
If you have not booked accommodation, the work experience week will end on Friday.
Are international students welcome?
Yes. International students are welcome and fully supported throughout the programme. Guidance is provided for travel, accommodation, and settling in, ensuring a smooth transition to living and learning in a new environment.

If you’re staying in accommodation, staff are available 24/7, and university security is also on site at all times.
How do I book, and what are the entry requirements?
Booking is simple, choose your preferred dates and complete the registration online. The Biology Week is designed for students aged 15–18 and does not require prior experience in biology. International students are welcome, though a good standard of English is needed to fully engage with the programme.
Does Study Mind offer any additional support after the programme ends?
Yes, we continue to support you even after the programme ends. We offer guidance with UCAS applications, personal statement writing, and career advice.
