About Me

Hi! My Name is Rocco and I’m a Medical Student at the University of Birmingham (ie the best Med School).

At the time of writing this (June 2023) I’ve just completed first year here, which I’ve thoroughly enjoyed and achieved a Distinction in.

In terms of medicine, I’m interested in pursuing emergency medicine due to its versatility and ability to make such a huge difference in such a pivotal, unexpected and overwhelming part of people’s lives. I’m also excited by medical education and research, and I’m currently involved in projects related to this with national leaders. I’m involved in the Medical Orchestra society, and I will be teaching Basic Life Support to first years starting from September.

Away from University I’m a big F1 fan, so spend half of my weekends watching cars drive around in circles! I also like to play piano and playing with my border terrier dog called Ted. My friends describe me as a calm committed, and down-to-earth person, who balances having a laugh with being serious when needed.

As the first person in my family to go to University at all – yet alone study medicine – I understand some of the challenges of coming from outside of the “culture”, and I hope to help people from all backgrounds have the opportunity to pursue what they love.

I’ve helped two people from the year below me with their applications and interviews to get offers at Birmingham, and receiving the all capitals “I GOT IN” message has got to be one of the highlights of the year! This past year has taught me as much personally as academically, and I’m excited to use what I’ve learnt to help other people get into medicine and thrive.

My teaching style

I think the basis of any teaching/tutoring should be built on trust and empathy, and focus on the importance of building rapport and being patient and understanding because we’re all different at the end of the day and learn differently. Tutoring experience ranging from French, to History, to Chemistry, to even playing piano has allowed me to develop versatile communication skills to adapt to varying needs.

I also try to base teaching on real-world applications as much as possible, to hopefully make things more engaging and develop real confidence.

My past experience

Tutoring is something I have done as long as I can remember in one form or another, both informally and formally. I truly find it one of the most rewarding things to be able to use knowledge, techniques and tips and ticks I’ve learnt myself to help identify barriers to understanding, and help others reach their potential. During A levels particularly I helped out my classmates in Biology, Chemistry and Maths, and it was so rewarding to see them start to enjoy the subjects again and attain As in the final exams.

Over this past year I have been tutoring A Level Biology online, and have helped two people with their applications and interviews for Birmingham which they were both successful in. I’ve also returned to my secondary school multiple times to give talks about applying to medicine and giving an insight into what medical school is like.

In the past I’ve also had experience teaching piano, to some Grade 3 students which was also really rewarding.

My Proudest Achievements

One of my proudest achievements has got to be achieving an ARSM Diploma in Piano Performance, as I was studying for this whilst also studying for A Levels, and it represents a decade’s worth of dedication and passion for music.

Another one has got to be helping to lead my house in secondary school – who have always been notoriously ‘rogue’ – to win the house trophy at the end of Upper 6th. Organising and leading rehearsals for events from dance to music to cross country with students from ages 11-18 was definitely challenging at times, but so enjoyable and seeing the lasting legacy even now is a great feeling.
