Lachlan
About Me
Hi, I’m Lachlan and I’m currently working towards my Master’s Degree in Engineering Science. I study at St Catherine’s College, Oxford. I have a keen interest in engineering, maths and physics, and when I’m not working, I spend my free time working on DIY projects and making music.
I offer coaching for the Oxford admissions process, specialising in students who need to sit the PAT. I can provide mock interviews and personal statement advice for Engineering or Materials students, as well as PAT coaching. I am also able to tutor Maths, Physics and Further Maths at GCSE and A-Level, and additionally the Engineering stream of the Design Technology A-Level.
I have been interested in STEM from a young age, excelling at Maths and Physics at school, attending NASA student outreach programs and achieving an Arkwright Scholarship for engineering science, which enabled me to follow my passion and make it through the arduous Oxford admissions process.
Over the course of my degree so far, I have gained experience in many different fields of engineering, such as materials science, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics and structural mechanics. However, I specialise in electronics, information and control engineering.
I grew up surrounded by computers from the 80s and 90s, and I enjoy spending my time restoring and modifying them, such as my iMac G3 and Atari 1040 ST. I also enjoy creative projects, having previously built a hovercraft using a garden chair, a shower curtain and a leaf blower!
My teaching style
I work through past papers with students while aiming to create a relaxed and familiar environment, enabling them to talk through their workings and take confidence in their judgement and decision-making. The level of involvement with a question varies with the student’s confidence level, enabling them to become more independent as they improve and become more confident in their own ability, but I always go over their work with a keen eye for detail afterwards.
My past experience
I have experience with tutoring a variety of subjects and skill levels. I have tutored GCSE and A-Level Maths, Physics and Further Maths, and also the Engineering stream of the Design technology A-Level. I have tutored one previous student who applied successfully to Oxford for Materials Science. I have previously worked as a piano teacher for both adult and child beginners.
My Proudest Achievements
In my academic career, my proudest achievements have been obtaining the Arkwright Scholarship, as well as being admitted to Oxford.
In my tutoring career, my proudest achievement was when someone under my tutelage earned a place on the Materials course at Oxford.
In my personal life, my proudest achievement has been building a powered hovercraft using home items and car parts. Additionally, I write and perform music, and have performed to crowds of over 500 people.
