About Me

My name is Mustafa and I am 23 years old, I have recently graduated Masters in chemistry from Imperial College and currently studying a PGCE course at UCL.

Recently finishing A-levels with A*AA in Maths, Chemistry and Biology respectfully, I understand the struggles of students trying to translate what they learnt into an exam paper as I was a person who learnt very slowly but eventually came into terms with how to study correctly.

The reason to why I chose chemistry as a subject to teach is because of my thorough understanding of the area and my huge experience with questions (As I recall, I believe I covered almost every corner of the syllabus in my first go). Not only that but as a way to study, I always broke down the hard concepts into simpler ways to explain them. Some would argue I am not good enough as I haven’t achieved an A* but going over what I didn’t do before, I know exactly how to achieve it more efficiently.

Experience as a Tutor:
–> Taught my A-level friends doing chemistry afterschool
–> Currently giving a student session weekly throughout his year
–> Taught children as young as 10 and pursuing a masters in teaching in UCL

My teaching style

How I tutor:
I tend to avoid the “taking notes” approach but rather explain the “how” and “why” things occur to make sure my student understands the topic. If in cases where they must memorise, I help to provide acronyms and short-cuts / condense the information. I use a whiteboard followed with pictures and diagrams to explain the content and I bring Past-paper questions to show them how to map their knowledge in the exam.

When tutoring online, I call up my students via zoom and use a separate program to show my students my computer screen so they can see what I’m doing, I use a graphics tablet, so my handwriting and flow of writing is very easy to see and read. I use Microsoft OneNote, a “digital notebook” that I create for each student and share with them, that way, our lesson notes can be viewed on almost every device and printed if needed.

Before I give my sessions, I always need to know what exam board my student has. This is extremely important to know, as for your A-levels, it is definitely never enough to “learn chemistry”, you need to know what you’re going to get examined on. Furthermore, I would like to know where the student is at and how many hours they require, this is also important so when I design the session, I can take into account this information so that the number of hours they paid for is taught correctly. I also need to know what their topic is.
So, in a nutshell, I need the following:

-> Number of Hours
-> Type of Tuition & Location
-> Exam-board, Module or topic name

Due to Covid-19, I can only teach online using skype, sharing screen and a graphics tablet.

Subjects I tutor:
–> Chemistry (across all years and exam boards)
