About Me

Peyton Cherry is a Postdoctoral Affiliate with the School of Anthropology and Museum Ethnography who completed their DPhil in Anthropology in August 2025. Their doctoral research focused on sexual consent activism and education in Tokyo by comparing the activities of two grassroots organisations between 2022 and 2023. Their broader research interests are situated at the intersection of social anthropology, Japanese studies, and gender & sexuality studies. They plan to continue researching social movements and activist campaigns, especially related to consent, gender presentation, and creative practices. Future projects may involve comparisons on transnational communities, sexuality education, and activism between Japan, the UK, and various East and Southeast Asian countries.

Peyton is originally from the United States but has now lived in a variety of countries, including Japan, Croatia, Uganda, and the UK. They are currently based in the United Kingdom where they studied for their MSc and DPhil courses at the University of Oxford. In their free time, Peyton enjoys painting detailed illustrations inspired by fantasy and nature as well as writing sci-fi and fantasy stories, gardening, and going on scenic walks.

My teaching style

My teaching style is always student-first and begins with checking both the student’s current knowledge level and the way they learn most effectively. For example, whether they prefer visual or audio learning materials and whether they prefer to review essays during tutor lessons or go over new concepts. I also believe that students can always offer a new perspective to tutors and teachers, which means my lessons will usually have a discussion component–loosely modelled off of the tutorial system at Oxbridge.

My past experience

Yes, I have taught a variety of students from diverse and international backgrounds in Japan, the US, the UK and in Uganda. This has been in the capacity of a programme coordinator, teaching assistant and online tutor with other online learning platforms. I have worked with students to write and polish university admission essays, practice academic writing and presenting, and discuss international relations and cultural studies.

My Proudest Achievements

One of my proudest achievements is learning that a student who requested my help in reviewing her Oxford application essay was accepted to her first-choice MSc programme. She has since been accepted to a PhD programme and continues to succeed academically and professionally.
