Pouria
About Me
Hello, I’m Pouria, an international medical student at the University of Sheffield. My passion for medicine is matched by my enthusiasm for sharing knowledge and helping others succeed. Throughout my academic journey, I have consistently achieved A* grades in GCSEs and A-levels, thanks to effective revision techniques that I am eager to pass on to you.
My dedication to teaching has driven me to support many students in their academic pursuits. At school, I founded a Healthcare Society, where I successfully mentored over 20 students, helping them secure offers to study medicine and dentistry in the UK. My expertise extends beyond medicine to sciences and mathematics, demonstrated by my achievements such as a Merit in the Maclaurin Olympiad (recognizing me among the top 200 mathematicians out of 200,000 in the UK) and securing 4 A* grades in my A-levels.
In my first year at medical school, I achieved a score of 91% in my exams, placing me among the top of my year group. Additionally, as the treasurer of the Radiology Society of Sheffield, I contribute to teaching initiatives and have worked on national projects like the UK Medical Licensing Assessment (MLA) teaching. Additionally, I am hosting an anatomy-radiology teaching series for first year medical students.
Outside of academics, I maintain a healthy work-life balance by going to the gym and boxing, hobbies that keep me physically fit and mentally sharp.
I also enjoy programming and have worked for a company as a web developer in addition to my studies.
My teaching style
My teaching style is highly adaptable. I start by assessing your needs and communicating with you to identify your strengths and areas for improvement. By focusing on your weaker areas while also reinforcing your strengths, I aim to create a balanced and effective learning experience. I strive to make sessions engaging by asking questions and guiding you through your revision. Ensuring your comfort is a priority, and I tailor each session to match your learning pace, making the process both enjoyable and productive.
My past experience
I led the Healthcare Society at my school, where I successfully helped dozens of students gain admission into medical programs. In addition, I tutored students for medical school interviews, assisting many in securing places at prestigious institutions such as Bristol, Manchester, Imperial, Exeter, Sheffield, St George’s, and Queen Mary’s. Currently, I mentor students from Year 12 through to medical school as part of the In2MedSchool program, where my efforts have received excellent feedback.
I have also led workshops for personal statements and interviews and have read and edited many personal statements.
I also organised a live MMI day for over 25 students as the leader of my Society, helping them experience the actual University MMI setting.
I was also invited to the UCAT panel last year to review some of the UCAT official SJT questions.
My Proudest Achievements
I have had numerous achievements throughout all stages of my life, such as being ranked 13th out of 14,000 applicants in an admissions test in Iran. However, as an international student facing a very limited number of medical places in the UK (6% of the places), receiving three medical school offers is an accomplishment I am particularly proud of.
