About Me

Hello! I’m Hortense, a native French speaker with over 10 years of experience teaching French and German in schools across the UK and Ireland. I hold a PGCE in MFL and a TEFL qualification, and I’m currently awaiting the results of my MSc in Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy. I teach online with Lingoda, working with adult learners from around the world at various levels, and I love creating engaging, interactive lessons that build confidence and real-world communication skills. I’ve also taught French creatively through cooking, drama, and PE classes, encouraging children to explore the language in fun, hands-on ways. My approach is student-centred and discovery-based—I guide learners to find patterns, form rules, and take ownership of their learning. During my MSc placement, I also offered counselling online, which deepened my ability to listen, adapt, and support people holistically. I speak several languages including Romanian, German, and Japanese, and I use this experience to empathise with and support language learners on their journey. Whether you’re a beginner or an advanced speaker, my goal is to help you feel empowered, independent, and excited about learning.

My teaching style

My teaching style is rooted in the belief that language learning should be joyful, meaningful, and empowering. With over a decade of experience teaching French and German in schools across the UK and Ireland, I have developed a learner-centered approach that nurtures communication, curiosity, independence, and creativity. My goal is always to create a supportive space where learners feel safe to express themselves, explore the language, and take risks without fear of judgment.

A cornerstone of my approach is discovery-based learning. Rather than delivering grammar rules in a traditional way, I guide students to notice language patterns, compare examples, and deduce rules themselves. This process encourages deeper understanding, critical thinking, and ownership of their learning journey. It’s truly rewarding to see learners have those “aha!” moments when they figure out grammar through their own observations.

I’m particularly passionate about making language learning fun, hands-on, and real, especially for children. I use realia—authentic materials like menus, brochures, recipes, and maps—to make lessons more engaging and relevant. These everyday items connect learners to the culture behind the language and help them develop practical communication skills. I also incorporate CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning), teaching subjects like cooking, PE, and drama in French. For example, students might follow a recipe in French, act out a story in roleplay, or give and follow instructions during a physical activity. This approach enhances not only their language skills but also their ability to think and function in French across different contexts.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, I transitioned to online teaching and developed interactive, engaging methods to maintain connection and energy in virtual classrooms. Since then, I’ve continued teaching online with Lingoda, where I work with adult learners of all levels and backgrounds. I tailor each lesson to suit learners’ individual goals—whether it’s preparing for travel, advancing professionally, or simply speaking with more fluency and confidence. I use digital tools, visual aids, and topic-based learning to keep lessons dynamic and motivating.

My background in counselling has also shaped the way I teach. While completing my MSc in Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy, I worked online with students and staff, providing emotional support and developing deep listening skills. This experience has helped me create a classroom environment that is not only intellectually stimulating but also emotionally safe and inclusive. I’m highly attuned to learners’ emotional needs and work to ensure they feel seen, respected, and encouraged throughout their journey.

As a speaker of multiple languages—French, English, Romanian, German, and some Japanese—I understand the ups and downs of language learning firsthand. This gives me insight into the challenges my students face and allows me to empathise and support them with personalised strategies. I meet learners where they are and help them move forward with confidence, creativity, and clarity.

Ultimately, what I value most in teaching is helping students become more confident, independent, and genuinely curious about the language and culture they’re learning. Whether I’m teaching online or in person, to children or adults, my aim is always to make learning an enjoyable and empowering experience.

My past experience

My teaching style is warm, student-centered, and highly adaptable. With over 10 years of experience teaching French and German in UK and Irish schools, I’ve worked across all age groups, from primary to sixth form, and supported a wide range of learners including SEN, EAL, and adult students. During my TEFL degree in Ireland, I also taught English at university level to international and Erasmus students—an experience that deepened my ability to support learners from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds.

When the COVID-19 pandemic moved education online, I quickly adapted to virtual teaching, developing engaging and interactive lessons using digital tools. This period strengthened my ability to create a positive, focused atmosphere even in remote settings.

Now working with Lingoda, I teach French online to global learners of all levels. I strive to make language learning enjoyable and practical by weaving cultural context into lessons and encouraging real-world communication. I speak several languages—French, English, Romanian, German, and Japanese—so I deeply understand the challenges and rewards of learning a new language. My goal is always to help students progress with confidence, and to ensure they feel heard, supported, and inspired throughout their journey.

My Proudest Achievements

One of my proudest achievements as a teacher has been making language learning enjoyable, meaningful, and empowering—especially for children. I’ve always believed that learners thrive when they are encouraged to take ownership of their learning and discover things for themselves. Over the years, I’ve developed a teaching style that is highly communicative, rooted in discovery-based learning, and designed to build confidence, independence, and curiosity.

I’m particularly proud of integrating French across creative and practical subjects such as cooking, drama, and PE. These cross-curricular lessons allowed children to explore vocabulary and grammar in a fun, hands-on way—whether it was following recipes in French, acting out plays, or giving instructions during sports. Instead of passively receiving rules, students were encouraged to notice patterns, compare examples, and formulate grammar rules themselves—turning language into a puzzle they were excited to solve.

My work has extended beyond the classroom. I now teach adults online with Lingoda, delivering French lessons across a range of topics and levels. I enjoy tailoring each session to the learner’s goals while keeping it interactive and real-life focused. Working online has taught me how to build rapport, maintain engagement, and make remote learning just as dynamic as in-person classes.

During my MSc in Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy, I also had the opportunity to work online with students and staff as part of my placement, combining empathy and communication in a different but equally rewarding way. This experience deepened my ability to support learners holistically—emotionally and intellectually.

Helping learners of all ages become self-reliant, confident, and genuinely interested in language is what I find most fulfilling. Watching them discover their own capacity to learn, reflect, and communicate is what continues to inspire me every day.
