11About Me
My name is Maxime, and I am a first-year maths student at University of Oxford. I am very passionate about anything to do with maths, and never miss out on the opportunity to participate in maths competitions or to discuss challenging problems with others. Having taught myself A-level further maths, I am familiar with various ways of thinking about the content, and the most intuitive ways to learn the key concepts on the specification. I also pride myself on my ability to communicate mathematical ideas effectively, maintaining both clarity and precision throughout a conversation. I particularly love pure maths (although I am able to help out with applied maths too!), and I love complex numbers, linear algebra, and group theory. In my free time I climb and play chess, and play the clarinet- I love all genres, and especially jazz 🙂
My teaching style
When tutoring, my priority is to maintain a productive conversation in order to ensure the tutee understands the material we are covering, and so that I can help guide them towards the right ideas. I frequently use series of guiding questions to encourage my tuteee to practice trying to think about the problem independently, to finally boost their confidence and give them an intuition for the most useful approaches to various problems. Typically in a one-hour lesson, we would go through three or four questions together that are designed to challenge and to build up problem-solving experience, stopping along the way to help clarify various misconceptions or weaker topics if needed.
My past experience
I have tutored students from 11-18 in maths, from of primary school exams to A-levels.
My Proudest Achievements
My proudest achievement has been getting into Oxford University; my second proudest was progressing into the second round of the online International Gamma Maths Olympiad this year, after solving many challenging (but gratifying) questions.
