About Me
I’ve just finished my second year of maths at Oxford so my admissions process and A levels are still fresh in my memory. However, university maths has allowed me to better understand what tutors and examiners are looking for at that stage.
I offer comprehensive MAT tutoring as well as practice interviews and guidance for personal statements. I’ve amassed a lot of resources from my own admissions cycle and I’m knowledgeable about the sort of concepts and formats of questions that come up repeatedly. The MAT has a lot of fairly predictable tricks that I aim to familiarise the student with but we will also develop a thorough understanding of the whole syllabus and the university level concepts that underlay the questions so they can tackle more unpredictable questions. We will also talk a lot about exam technique for the MAT and how to present your answers and thinking process in the later questions and interviews.
For A Level Maths and Further Maths tutoring, I make sure a student is well versed with the formats and topics that come up every year. Then, to land securely in the higher marks I’ll stretch their understanding of the syllabus and develop problem solving skills with extension questions.
My teaching style
For maths the most valuable preparation you can do will always be practice and application so my tutoring centres around that.
Firstly I’ll collate questions for my student to attempt before the exam. We’ll go through all the standard past papers but I also have a wealth of extension questions if we want to practice a specific concept or technique.
Based on these materials, we’ll make a plan of what we want to go over in each session so that we can have enough time for weaker topics without burdening them too much on top of an already heavy A level workload.
Rather than just giving students answers to questions and hoping they memorise them, in my tutoring sessions I aim to help the students to understand the concepts going on underneath the question so they can apply their understanding to whatever is thrown at them.
My Proudest Achievements
Surviving my first year of Oxford! The maths was a huge step up from A level and my time there has taught me a lot about handling very daunting exams and problem solving under pressure, which are skills I try to pass on to my students.
