About Me
Hey! I’m Ivy, a medical student at UCL with a strong academic background and extensive experience tutoring in STEM subjects and medical school applications. At GCSE I achieved the equivalent of 12 A*s, and at A-level I obtained A*AAA in Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. I was awarded Highest in Year Group for three consecutive years in the UK Maths Challenge, consistently ranked top of my year across STEM subjects, and scored up to 99% in A-level exam papers. I also ranked in the top 5% globally for my admission tests and received academic scholarships from top-ranking secondary schools.
Beyond my own studies, I have a proven track record of mentoring and teaching peers. I have conducted mock medical school interviews, reviewed personal statements, and supported applications, helping students successfully secure offers at leading universities including UCL (Education, Medicine), KCL (Medicine), and Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Aerospace Engineering).
As a tutor, I am patient, approachable, and encouraging. I focus on developing students’ problem-solving and critical thinking skills, empowering them to work independently. I am also passionate about widening access to medicine and supporting aspiring applicants in achieving their goals. Being fluent in both English and Chinese, I can adapt my teaching to diverse learners.
My teaching style
I believe that true academic success comes from understanding concepts rather than simply memorising them. In my lessons, I focus on building a strong foundation of understanding through clear, detailed explanations, often supported by graphs, mind maps, and carefully curated notes that I developed during my own studies.
I also place emphasis on helping students establish effective study methods and schedules, so that their learning extends beyond our sessions. Practice is another key element of my approach: I regularly provide practice questions, both as exercises to complete during lessons and as homework to reinforce knowledge.
However, I believe practice alone is not enough — constructive feedback is essential. I take time to go through mistakes carefully, ensuring students fully understand why an answer was wrong and how to improve. My teaching style is encouraging yet structured; I can be a little strict at times, because I believe high expectations combined with strong support bring out the best in my students.
My past experience
Yes, I have extensive past experience with teaching and tutoring. At school, I initiated and led peer study groups in Mathematics and STEM subjects, running regular tutorials and pre-GCSE revision sessions. I also designed and delivered Physics lessons specifically for students preparing for the BMAT who had not taken Physics at A-level.
In addition, I conducted mock medical school interviews, reviewed personal statements, and provided application guidance, helping several students successfully secure offers at highly competitive universities.
At university, I have continued to develop my teaching skills through roles in societies, such as delivering tailored teaching sessions in the Surgical Society and helping to design and deliver tutorials for medical students in charities. These experiences have strengthened my ability to explain complex concepts clearly, adapt to different learners’ needs, and provide constructive feedback.
My Proudest Achievements
My proudest achievements include achieving 12 A*s equivalent at GCSEs and A*AAA at A-level in STEM subjects, securing a place to study Medicine at UCL as one of only 24 international students admitted each year, and successfully supporting peers through tutoring and mentoring. I am especially proud of helping students improve their grades substantially and gain offers from top universities.
