About Me
Hiya! I’ll be a first-year medical student at Monash University this year. I studied in the UK, so I have first hand experience with GCSEs and A levels, as well as the UCAT, which I sat twice, once for UK applications and once for ANZ applications. Because of this, I’m familiar with both in-person and online exam formats.
I’ve also gone through the medical school application process in both the UK and Australia, so I’m very familiar with the different interview styles used in each system. For every medical school interview I was invited to, I was successful in receiving an offer, which means I can offer practical insight into what interviewers are really looking for.
Throughout school, I mentored students in lower years, helping with all GCSE sciences and Maths at both GCSE and A level. I now also do private tutoring for GCSE and A level Sciences and Maths, so I have experience tailoring explanations to different abilities and learning styles.
My lessons are interactive and student focused, meaning I’ll ask lots of questions, encourage you to explain your thinking, and use diagrams wherever possible. I strongly believe that active learning is the best way to build real understanding. Alongside mastering subject content, I place a big emphasis on exam technique, and we’ll regularly practise past-paper questions so you feel confident and well prepared going into exams.
My teaching style
My lessons are structured depending on how the student learns, and what they want to learn; if, for example, a student is having trouble with angle theorems, then we’ll go through some angle theorem content together, followed by some practice questions to review what we’ve just done and then some real past paper questions to test their knowledge in an exam situation.
I love drawing diagrams as I think that they’re a great way to learn, especially in subjects like Biology and Maths, where visualising things can be very useful.
Helping students achieve goals gives a real boost to their confidence, so I try to set out short-term goals such as those to complete within a lesson, as well as longer-term goals such as being able to answer a variety of questions on a topic to have something to aim for over a few sessions. I measure progress by regularly asking questions within the lesson to see how student’s feel about a topic we have just covered or covered some time ago.
I think that interacting with the student is the most important thing to encourage learning; no-one wants to just sit there an be talked at! I’ll try to get the student as involved as possible to help them drive their own learning and to make it a co-operative experience!
My Proudest Achievements
One of my proudest achievements is how much I’ve grown in confidence and independence over the past few years. Navigating different education systems and taking responsibility for my own academic and interview preparation pushed me well outside my comfort zone. Through that, I learned how to reflect on feedback, adapt my approach, and improve, which I genuinely believe are skills that I now bring into both my studies and my tutoring!
