About Me
Hello! My name is Isaac and I’m a postgraduate student in Film and Screen Studies at the University of Cambridge. I previously studied at Cambridge for a BA in English, graduating with first-class honours in the summer of 2024.
Growing up, my mum was a teacher (albeit in Chemistry, so it’s safe to say that I’ve gone down a slightly different path!) and I was lucky enough to have so many brilliant teachers myself throughout my school years — so I know, from first-hand experience, how important informed guidance and positive encouragement can be in helping students to achieve their best. Having undertaken extra tutoring for my Maths GCSE, I also know that sometimes getting all of that in school isn’t quite enough — a little bit of extra help can go a long way!
Outside of academia, I enjoy drama, music, poetry, film, and taking long walks with my dog.
My teaching style
I believe that students learn best when encouraged to adopt a holistic attitude towards their education. My teaching approach doesn’t skimp on detail, but also invites students to view their learning through a macro lens, making creative and generative connections between different ideas and developing long-term strategies for dealing with difficulties in their studies. I’m guided by positivity and a firm belief in the importance of getting things wrong, especially when it might lead the learning process down some interesting and unusual paths! Whilst I, of course, direct all of my teaching towards specific exam practices, I think students are best prepared to be tested for these qualifications when they’re able to view what they’re learning as valuable and exciting in and of itself, not just as a means to an end.
My Proudest Achievements
I was proud to be awarded the Cambridge Quarterly Prize for my undergraduate dissertation, which led to the piece being published in an academic journal. I was also a contestant on the 2022 series of University Challenge — an experience that was as rewarding as it was terrifying!
