About Me

Hello! My name is Oviya, and I’m a 3rd-year medical student at UNSW. I completed high school in Singapore before starting my medical degree, and my journey into medicine has been shaped by both service and curiosity.

I’ve always seen medicine as a bridge between service and science. My early experiences volunteering as a teacher for primary school children in underprivileged communities sparked my passion for helping others, while learning about the human body deepened my fascination with how complex, puzzling, and incredible it truly is.

I still remember taking a gap year to prepare for the UCAT ANZ and feeling completely unsure about where to start. I spent hours searching online for affordable or free UCAT resources, trying to figure out the best way to study. Through trial and error, YouTube tutorials, and resources like Medic Mind, I eventually found study methods that worked for me.

Having been through that process myself, I’d love to give back by supporting students currently preparing for the UCAT. I’m also happy to help review personal statements and guide students on how to build a strong application, stand out authentically, and feel confident being themselves during interviews.

While tutoring helps me support my medical school expenses, my priority is genuinely helping students. I aim to keep lessons affordable, and outside of sessions, students are always welcome to message me with questions or concerns along the way.

If this sounds like something that could help you, I’d love to connect and support you through your UCAT preparation. Feel free to reach out anytime 😊

My teaching style

As a new tutor, I place strong emphasis on creating a supportive and collaborative learning environment. My teaching style follows a balanced 50–50 approach between the student and the teacher. I’ll first introduce and explain a strategy, then work through a few questions step by step to demonstrate how it works in practice. I also take time to understand how each student naturally approaches questions, identify strengths, and make targeted improvements before having them try questions independently.

A key focus of my sessions is exposure to a wide variety of question types, helping students build confidence, adaptability, and strong exam-day decision-making skills.

My past experience

While I’m new to paid tutoring, I do have prior teaching experience in informal settings. I’ve taught my sibling and regularly supported friends during group study sessions, where we learnt collaboratively by explaining concepts to one another, sharing strategies, and working through challenging questions together. Teaching in these settings helped me realise that learning is a two-way process, and I’ve found that I often deepen my own understanding as much as I help others strengthen theirs. These experiences have shaped my patient, adaptable, and student-centred teaching style.

My Proudest Achievements

I don’t measure my achievements purely by titles or awards. Instead, I take pride in reaching personal milestones and celebrating small but meaningful goals along the way. Some of the things I’m proud of include stepping out of my comfort zone to take on my first part-time job, learning how to drive, and developing everyday life skills such as cooking special meals for my family and learning how to paint.

I’m also proud of larger milestones like gaining entry into medicine and learning how to live independently in on-campus accommodation. Each of these experiences reflects growth, resilience, and a willingness to learn, and together they’ve shaped who I am today
