Catrin
About Me
Hi, my name is Catrin and I am in my 4th year studying medicine at Cardiff. I have lived in Wales for the past 15 years, but lived in Ghana, West Africa prior to that, which is where my interest in medicine stems from. I am very active within Cardiff Medics Ladies Hockey. I have played for the club for the duration of my time at university so far, and this year I am the Wellbeing officer, with student welfare being something that is so incredibly important to me.
I am very interested in medical education, and have a passion for widening access to medicine and providing students the opportunities to maximise their chances at gaining a place at medical school, which I know can be a daunting and stressful process. I have tutored students going through the interview process who have gained places at different universities, as well as being a former interviewer for Cardiff University MMIs.
I hope to be the tutor you chose to help you with your interview process, and maximise your chances at getting an offer 🙂
My teaching style
I have a highly adaptable teaching style. Every student is different, and what works for one person won’t work for another, so adapting my teaching style means students will get the most out of each session. If students want to focus on specific topics, I am happy for them to guide what we work on. However, where a student may not be so sure, I will be happy to provide structured sessions so the student can get the most out of each session.
My past experience
I have tutored students previously on the interview process who have been successful at gaining places at both Cardiff University and Birmingham University. I have also been an interviewer at Cardiff University for their MMIs which allows me insight into what universities look for in their interviewees.
I was a tutor as part of a widening access scheme for students in North Wales, to improve their interview skills, critical thinking skills and presentation skills.
My Proudest Achievements
My proudest achievement is getting into medical school. I struggled during Sixth Form to keep on top of my work whilst balancing school with a job, extra curricular activities and and new responsibilities in my family due to my dad having had an accident, spending over 6 months in hospital. Having thought I would have to take a year out and restart my A-levels, my admission to medical school was a testament to my hard work, determination and perseverance and I showed myself that I could achieve anything I put my mind to.
