About Me
Hi! My name is Jamie and I’m a fourth year Physics and Philosophy student at Oxford University. I have pretty broad subject knowledge from the Maths, Science, and Philosophy sides of my degree. I also achieved 4 A*s at A-Level, and a clean sheet of A*s and 9s at GCSE. I spent a lot of time at school training for Maths Olympiads, especially the British Mathematical Olympiad, available only by invitation to top performers in the SMC.
I like to think that studying the Philosophy of Physics has given me exactly the skillset for tutoring: the subject revolves around clarifying and and explaining knotty problems in physics.
I’m a big believer that there are a few ‘easy wins’ in university applications that not many people know of and anyone can benefit from. My tutoring style focuses on these, and the principles behind how you approach problems, and not simply your knowledge — exactly what the interviewers will be looking for.
My teaching style
I like to guide students through their own thought process. I don’t believe that students get a lot out of listening to a tutor lecturing. I alternative communicating one specific skill, and then iterate back and forth with the student helping them develop that skill.
My past experience
I have done 20 hours of paid tutoring, and 10 hours of practice interviews given voluntarily to students of the secondary school I used to go to.
My Proudest Achievements
My proudest achievements are my grades in my Physics and Philosophy degree so far, and also the Computer Science research paper I published last summer.
