20About Me
Hi, I’m Jemima, a first year student at University of Oxford studying Earth sciences (which is related to the science behind geography)! I’m from Northumberland, and I went to a state school. I redid Year 12 as the subjects I initially chose didn’t suit me, however this hasn’t hindered my process in any way! For my A-levels I took Chemistry, Maths and Geography whilst doing an EPQ. After my first year in Sixth Form I also sat an AS in Biology so I have experience with that too. I am friendly and adaptable, and fully understand that individuals need tailored teaching styles to help them with how they learn, therefore adaptable in my style of teaching. I have a younger brother who I helped study during his GCSEs and I am most experienced in science however I still did well in English and History GCSE so I can also help with those.
My teaching style
I adapt my teaching style depending on the student – for example if someone is very logical and struggling with English, I help them create a structure they can use in all their essays that is repeatable yet will produce high marks. I focus on individualistic needs as I understand how frustrating it can be when teaching styles don’t fit some students in classes. I focus on growth – as my first geography mock when I was 15 I got a 5 and by the end of year 11 I managed to achieve a 9!
My past experience
I have volunteered at a secondary school helping with Chemistry, Geography and Maths for a week at GCSE levels, and also within my own secondary school I volunteered in humanities lessons to help out.
My Proudest Achievements
My proudest achievement would be not allowing redoing Year 12 to set me back, as I wouldn’t be in Oxford without it and it also shows that not all set backs are negative. More quantitively my proudest achievement would be not getting lower than an A (as a final grade) throughout my GCSEs and A-levels.
