About Me
My name is Kate Valentine Crisp, and I am a writer and educator, raised in Glastonbury I am now based in London. I love teachings and sparking excitement and intrigue amongst my pupils.
Education should be joyful, uplifting, and inspiring. It’s a gateway through which students can unlock their futures, deepen their understanding of the world, and ultimately discover more about themselves. I love working with young people to help them achieve their educational goals. There’s something incredibly rewarding about witnessing that moment when a concept clicks or when a student begins to feel genuine excitement about a subject they once found daunting. My own enthusiasm for my chosen topics fills me with such joy and sharing that with my tutees is a privilege.
More than simply providing the right tools for academic success, I want to spark a sense of curiosity and fascination in my students. My goal is to encourage them to push themselves not out of necessity, but out of genuine interest, a desire to explore, question, and grow.
My teaching style
When working with students, I make a point of liaising with their teachers and requesting school reports to identify any weak spots. From there, I design tailored, engaging exercises to strengthen those areas in a fun and supportive way.
I would describe my tutoring style as energetic and creative. I like to get to the root of what excites my pupil, whether it’s music, film, nature, or history, and weave those interests into our sessions. By creating genuine rapport, I can introduce ideas and exercises that feel accessible and engaging, making even complex topics more approachable. What’s more, by developing a rapport with my students, I make sure they feel 100% comfortable in being totally transparent with me about their problem areas. Even if this means coming back to the same thing multiple times.
I bring a lot of my own interests and experience into my teaching. As an English Literature graduate, I’m passionate about language, literature, and the power of symbols and metaphors. As a professional writer, I’m constantly finding creative solutions, which helps me present material in imaginative and memorable ways. And as professional a performer, I know how to instil confidence and encourage students to express themselves with self-assurance.
My past experience
My tutoring experience is varied and hands-on. For three years, I worked with a Russian-speaking child with autism, helping him learn English. This involved a creative and adaptable approach, including conjugation exercises, vocabulary expansion, creative writing, and oral storytelling. The combination of structured learning and imaginative play helped him build both his language skills and his confidence.
I also worked with a set of twins to help improve their GCSE English grades. This involved a focus on essay-writing skills, text analysis, and expanding their knowledge of the literary canon. We explored different periods of literature, drawing parallels to current affairs to make historical texts more accessible and relevant.
My Proudest Achievements
My proudest achievement as a tutor is helping a young boy over come his fear of public speaking. I monitored and coached him through a presentation for an English class, and helped supply him with the tools necessary to share with his whole grade. It was a privilege to watch him over come his fears and take on a task he didn’t think possible.
